Two quantities y and x are said to be directly proportional, or "in direct proportion" if y is given by a constant multiple of x i.e., y = cx for c a constant. This relationship is commonly written as y x.

A is directly proportional to B means that there is some number k such that A=kB.
When A is directly proportional to B we write AB. We then say that A and B are in direct proportion
