Ok, so if we break this question down into meals it would mean that at the beginning the hostel has enough meals for 80 students for 40 days.

80 x 40 = 3200 meals

If we then assumed that after 10 days these new students came along then how many meals would be left when they arrive:

80 x 10 = 800 meals eaten

3200 - 800 = 2400 meals left

Therefore in order to find out how long the remaining food will last we just need to divide the meals left by the new number of students:

80 + 20 = 100 students

2400 / 100 = 24 days
